Sugar Maple

Acer saccharum

A little larger on average than the red maple, the sugar maple also has a tall straight trunk.

Leaves:

This leaf is thin and delicate when compared to the red maple and feels almost soft in comparison. It has 5 lobes that stretch out into thin points. The 3 longer lobes near the top are more deeply divided than the 2 shorter ones near the stem.

Fall foliage:

A remarkable feature of this species is the colors it turns in the fall. At one time, a single leaf can be red, crimson, gold, yellow, orange and green.
