Northern Cardinal 

 

Cardinalis cardinalis

Physical Description:

Male Cardinals are a vibrant red throughout their entire body except on the face where there are black patches around the beak. Female Cardinals are mostly a chestnut brown, with a red hue on their tufts and tail feathers. Both have a short red beak. From tuft to tail the cardinal is about 8.75 inches long making it a fairly large backyard bird. They will normally perch in a hunched position.

Habitat:

Edge of forests, residential areas. 

Voice:

Cardinals have a complex musical whistled slurs at varying speeds. And a metallic chip. And soft chur.
