Mallard Duck

Anas platyrhynchos

Physical Description:

Large bird (20-26 in) with webbed orange feet. The males are characterized by their shiny green heads, orange bills, and distinct white, brown, and gray feather patterns. Females have brown bills and brown and white speckled feathers. Although both males and females have a shiny blue patch of feathers under their wing, it is exposed in females when not in flight. This is a social bird and it is not common to see one on its own

Habitat:

Because they feed in water, mallards are usually found in the shallow water of lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands.

Voice:

The classic “quack” associated with the mallard is made by the female; the male has a quieter, raspier call
