Eastern Cottonwood

 

Populus deltoides

 

Medium to large tree with stubby limbs. Trunk and branches are very wide in older trees. Similar to the quaking aspen, the leaves quiver and flutter in the wind. To distinguish from the quaking aspen, observe the shape of the leaf-

 

Leaves: Similar to a gray birch in shape, but has far fewer teeth that are blunt, and the pointed tip is more drawn out. Top is shiny green and thick, underside is paler in color
