Baltimore Oriole

Icterus galbula

Physical Description:

Baltimore Orioles average about 8 inches in length. They have broad necks. Their tails are long and taper downward. Their beaks have a deep base and are fine-pointed. Adult male orioles have black heads and necks. Their back wings are striped black and white. Their underbellies are a yellow-orange to deep orange. (This shade is often dependent on the season. One in Westford would probably be seen only in the summer, as they migrate, and would therefore have a deeper orange underbelly.) Females are similarly colored, but areas that are black on males are a light brown on females.

Habitat:

Edge of deciduous forests

Voice:

A short series of paired notes, repeated 2–7 times, lasts 1-2 seconds. Begining phrases are often descending. The flutelike sound has a full, rich tone.
