American Goldfinch 

 

Spinus tristis

Physical description: 

This small 5 inch long bird is commonly seen in the backyard. It striking gold color on both male and females makes it easily recognizable. The male has a black capped head covering the lore to the crown. The wings and tail are flecked black and white. Their beaks are either orange or black. 

Habitat:

 Fields, open wetlands, or gardens. (Often drawn to sunflowers.)
 

Voice: 

Calls have been described as a “titewtewtew”, a “bearbeebee”, and a risins “sweeyeet”. Their chatter is often a 30 second wrable.
